SUMMARY OF POSITION: Certified secondary teacher with knowledge of content and experience in building relationships with students. The teacher shall understand and apply the Common Core State Standards and best practice strategies to meet the academic, developmental, and social-emotional needs of students
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
COMPENSATION: Per the McBain Education Association Master Agreement. (Years of service will be considered.)
Responsibilities
- Teach K-5 music (as needed) 5th-grade beginning band, Middle School, and high School bands.
- Arrange music for small/large mixed ensembles, focusing on a variety of genres appropriate for bands such as contemporary music, classical, and folk tunes.
- Teach music theory and instrument techniques to help accomplish the performance level of music.
- Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
- Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principal, and teachers.
- Direct the band when it represents the school at parades, festivals, sporting events, and other public events (if applicable)
- Recruit students yearly for the band program by initiating outreach.
- Manage band activity account finances and fundraising
- Oversee the band room, including the music library, music stands, and equipment.
- Oversee the maintenance and repair of school-owned instruments; collect instrument borrow agreements from students and associated fees.
- Coordinate and organize the winter and spring concerts. (This will be coordinated with the choir teacher.)
- Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities, supervising and coordinating (developing) a marching band, pep band, and field trips.
Other Skills:
- To maintain daily lesson plans.
- Other duties as requested by the supervisor.
- Coaching positions may be available.
- Show an interest in after-school activities.
- Willing to be invested in the lives of the students at McBain Schools
Qualifications
- Shall provide and utilize instructional plans, strategies, methods, materials, and techniques that best meet the needs of individual students.
- Shall be responsible for the maintenance, disciplinary, and instructional activities in the classroom, in transit, and in other school settings where no other professional is in charge.
- In-depth understanding of students.
- Shall meet with parents at scheduled conferences or any other times that is necessary. ● Able to work as part of a team.
- To keep all student, parent, and staff information confidential.
- Keep a positive attitude when working with students, parents, other staff, and community members.
- Demonstrate competency in technology.
- Familiar with Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS)
- To ensure a safe environment for students at all times.
MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- State of Michigan Certification for grades K-12 Music/Band(additional endorsements preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
- Ability and willingness to work well with staff, parents, and students.
- Must be willing to receive additional training to improve job skills.
- Must demonstrate competency in the classroom.
- Must satisfactorily pass:
- Law enforcement background checks with fingerprinting.
- Personal and professional reference background check.
- Must receive a satisfactory response to P.A. 189 letter (Misconduct Law).
