Description

The Substitute Paraprofessional provides temporary support to teachers and students to ensure continuity of instruction and a safe, positive learning environment. Substitutes assist with academic tasks, student supervision, and behavioral support.

Substitute Paraprofessionals work under the direct supervision of the building principal, classroom teacher, and special education teacher.

Responsibilities

Instructional Support

  • Assist with teacher-directed lessons and classroom activities
  • Provide individual and small-group student support
  • Reinforce academic and behavioral expectations
  • Support the use of instructional materials and technology

Student Supervision & Support

  • Supervise students during classroom and non-classroom times (hallways, lunchroom, playground, transitions)
  • Support student engagement, independence, and positive behavior
  • Assist students in following classroom routines and expectations

Specialized Support (as assigned)

  • Implement accommodations or supports outlined in student plans (IEP/504)
  • Assist with mobility, safety, and personal care needs when required

Professional Expectations

  • Follow teacher lesson plans and school procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student information
  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and positive communication
  • Adhere to district policies, safety procedures, and emergency protocols
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Experience working with children preferred
  • Ability to follow directions, collaborate with staff, and adapt to changing classroom needs
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Employment Terms

  • Substitute Paraprofessionals serve on an on-call basis with assignments determined by district needs.
  • Compensation (Step 1 of the CBA) and scheduling follow the district's substitute guidelines.
