Youth Advisory Council (YAC)

Youth Advisory Council is made of student leaders who are passionate about health and wellness. YAC provides input on the wellness center’s services and initiates projects promoting health and wellness. YAC members determine their meeting schedule, project areas, and efforts with support from clinic staff. What is a School Wellness Program (SWP)?

The School Wellness Program (SWP) was launched in 2010. SWPs aim to provide services to promote academic success by helping students achieve their best possible physical and mental health status. SWP staff assist the school, parents, and other health professionals in the assessment, identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the health needs of the school community in order to appropriately direct services toward a healthy school environment.

Is this a free clinic?

The McBain Wellness Center bills insurance when applicable. The wellness center offers a sliding fee scale for families and students with no insurance or high deductible plans. Services are then provided at little or no out-of-pocket cost. The wellness center also coordinates with the Community Connections program to link families to community health workers that assist with applying for insurance, DHHS benefits, and other services.

My children already have a primary care physician. Can they use the wellness center?

The McBain Wellness Center does not replace primary care services, but can collaborate with a primary care provider. Students seeing the wellness center are able to spend more time in the classroom.

What is RAAPS?

Rapid Assessment for Adolescent Preventive Services (RAAPS) is a risk assessment developed especially for use with pre-teens, teens and young adults. Most adult health issues result from diseases, which is why adults are regularly screened for diseases. However, most serious teen health issues result from risky behaviors, not disease. Most teens engage in some risky behavior – sometimes without realizing it. The RAAPS survey helps us identify these risks early; once identified we can provide information, education and resources to you so you can make healthy decisions.

What are “confidential services”?
